Almerida is a small family beach resort about 20 minutes from Chania and 45 minutes from Chania airport, very much sort after which has tended to push property prices up. Lovely beach with about 6 tavernas, 5 bars and a few shops including 2 mini markets. Plaka is set high on the hill above Almerida and what was once a small village is now larger due to the influx of mainly Britians. It has 2 tavernas, shops, bars and 1 church. Fantastic views over Almerida Bay. Kokkino Choriois a further few kilometres up the mountainside, and the red village became famous when it was the film setting for "Zorba the Greek". The villade has wonderful views over Souda Bay and has become very popular with buyers. It has a village taverna in the square. Drapanos is a further few killometres up the mountain and inland and is a beautiful location for peace and quiet. It has two tavernas, a bar/restaurant and a local grocery shop. Tavronitis is a small beachside working village 20 minutes west of Chania. Pace of life is slow and easy and for permanent residents there are enough variety of shops and tavernas to ensure you don't have to go far for your everyday needs. There is a long pebbly beach which is rarely crowded. Gavalohori is a small traditional village about 3 kilometres inland from Almerida and has a wonderful slow and friendly atmosphere. The centre of the village has many old buildings. |
