Crete is a place of beauty with sensational sandy beaches, towering snow peaked mountains and sparkling blue sea. Although it is an island, the 5th largest in the Mediteranean, it is large with an area of 8312 square kilometres, nearly 260kms long and with a population of only 624000, there is plenty of space for everyone. The land is very fertile and produces amongst others oranges, peaches, avocadoes,strawberries, bananas and grapes, and the tomatoes and cucumbers they grow here taste so much better. The Cretans are generally very friendly people and crime is very low, walking alone at night causes no concerns and many young school children take themselves to school at a very early age. Greek is quite a hard language to learn but if you are unsuccessful at learning it, 70% of Cretans can get by in English. The cost of living in Crete is about 40% lower than that of most northern European countries and council tax is very very low. Now that Easyjet have started a service to Crete, getting here is now a lot cheaper. The Health Service in Crete is good, although different from the UK, hospital accident departments can see you virtually straight way and you can walk into any private Doctor and be seen very quickly, have a long consultation all for around 35 euros. What more can you want, good weather, great scenery, wonderful healthy food, friendly people, low crime rate and value for money houses.
